I wrote a copycat pattern for the super popular "C.C Beanie" by Colorado Chick. While in Chicago on a trip, I saw three different people wearing the same style hat in different colors. I noticed the first one because I stare at anything knit, whether machine-made or handmade. When I saw the second one, I assumed it must be a coincidence. But after I saw the third one, I turned to my husband and exclaimed, “I must knit that hat!” Then when I went home for a visit and hung out with a hometown friend, she was wearing the same hat I saw in Chicago, and I nearly tore it off her head in excitement. I obsessively analyzed it, counting stitches and rounds so I could faithfully replicate it.
The simple structure of the hat's design would allow it to look good in any color, including tonal, gradient, metallic, and tweed (though I doubt variegated or self-striping yarn would look good, as it would disrupt the stripe sequence.) If you do want to add stripes, just switch yarn colors on the 2nd rnd of the knit/St st rnds.
Without further ado, I present to you the Copy.Cat C.C Beanie!
Materials:
200 yards of worsted weight (4) acrylic yarn
US 7 (4.5mm) 16" circular needle and DPNS

5.0mm (H) crochet hook
scissors
yarn needle
pom-pom maker (optional)
Directions:

Knit one round 1x1 ribbing
Knit 1x1 twisted ribbing for 3.5”
Fold brim under and connect CO edge to live stitches; unzip the provisional CO one stitch at a time, knitting the CO stitch and live stitch together. Do this all the way around until brim is completely folded and joined. Be sure to tuck the CO tail within the folded brim – no need to weave it in!
Knit another round all the way around
Repeat the following sequence for a total of three times:
6 rnds purl
2 rnds St st
4 rnds 1x1 rib (NOT twisted)
2 rnds St st
Begin crown decreasing and switch to dpns when necessary:

Cut yarn and thread remaining stitches together w/ yarn needle. Pull through, tighten, and weave in end. Wear with pride!
EDIT: If you want to convert this hat into a Messy Bun Beanie, cut a hair elastic in half and thread it through the remaining live stitches after the second decrease round (approx. 21 sts rem), and then tie the elastic in an overhand knot. Please keep in mind that this hat is meant to be slightly slouchy, whereas Messy Bun Beanies are usually more form-fitting. Therefore, you may want to eliminate 1-2 rounds of purling in order to decrease the height of the hat so that it is less slouchy!
Alternatively, consider purling the crown instead of knitting it so the crown matches the purl rounds - this won’t look like the original, of course, but looks cool! Feel free to top it off with a pom-pom if you have lots of leftover yarn, or a faux fur pom-pom like the original! (It also looks good inside out, as I found out while finishing it!)
Christine at iKnits graciously filmed a FREE YouTube video tutorial to go along with this pattern! Be sure to subscribe to her station! (She's the one who came up with the brilliant idea to convert this or any beanie into a messy bun beanie!) Thanks, Christine!

Thanks for the pattern! I was looking for one that my son would wear but that didn't bore me while knitting it. Made it this Afternoon and it looks great - my boy likes it too <3

DeleteWhat is twisted ribbing
DeleteIt’s when you k1 p1 trough the back loops it makes a sharper nicer ribbed edge
DeleteHaving trouble getting CO stitches to match up when I tuck the brim under, any pointers?
ReplyDeleteI made a hat called Wurm with a similar brim. I used a provisional cast on and then transferred the cast on stitches to a second circular needle when I was ready to fold and knit the brim. I then knit the two stitches together around and it worked out well and my stitches matched!
DeleteI've made the Wurm hat, also. I did exactly the same thing with the second circular needle and it worked great.
DeleteA good neat cast on stich is the Rib Cast on.
DeleteMake 2stitches then place your needle between both stiches, make a stitch & than pull the stitch through to the front and knit the stitch and place it on your left needle, than make a stitch & repeat the process till you have your requied number of stiches.
This gives you a super neat & stretchy cast on for rib. It is also the best cast on for rib patterns that I've ever used.
I Hope you enjoy this handy hint too as it gives you a beautiful cast on edge that is neat & super stretchy.
I use this method on hat's, beanie's, sock's & sleeve cuff's anywear wear it requires a rib stitch. It is called the "Rib Cast On".
Carey
I have been casting on this way for almost 50yrs...I love it.
DeleteI love the rib cast on also
DeleteIs that the same as a cable cast on?
DeleteThank you :)
ReplyDeleteVery good experience, very helpful to me, thank you.

Thanks for sharing your pattern for this beautiful hat!
ReplyDeleteSo happy I found it!
ReplyDeleteThanks
Very useful, I am already knitting it. custom socks
DeleteHi! Thanks for the pattern, but what thicknes is the yarn in wool??
ReplyDeleteThe yarn weight is the same (worsted) regardless of fiber content.
DeleteI'm on my second one of these hats. Awesome hat with an amazing fit! Thanks for replicating the pattern for those of us who refuse to buy a store-bought knit hat. This is my new go-to hat pattern.
ReplyDeleteWhat does PM stand for after the provisional CO?
ReplyDeleteAlso, what do you mean by knit 1 x 1 TWISTED ribbing?
Thank you for your help.
PM=place marker and 1x1 twisted rib is to knit through the back loop(ktbl) and to purl through the back loop as well.
DeleteMy apologies - I take for granted that the average knitter is fluent in knitting abbreviations, and therefore don't include an abbreviation translation. "PM" means "Place Marker," and "twisted 1x1 rib" means to knit/purl through the back of the stitch so as to twist the stitch. There are many tutorials on YouTube if you need help. Thank you to "yrnlovr" for answering the question before I could get to it! :)
DeleteI didn't know twisted ribbed was. I made it and loved pattern thank
DeleteNever heard of it either and I have been knitting for about 55 years
DeleteStill don’t understand how to purl into the back. Do you knit both stitch as same time
DeleteI taught myself to knit and it took me about 2 years to realize that this was my default and that all of my stitches were twisted! I've straightened it out now :) Thanks for this fantastic pattern - great gift!!
DeleteI just watched a video on twisted ribbing and I can't wait to start this hat!!
DeleteWhat does st st stand for?
ReplyDeleteMy apologies - I take for granted that the average knitter is fluent in knitting abbreviations, and therefore don't include an abbreviation translation. "St st" stands for "Stockinette stitch" - hope that helps!
DeleteHahahaha! LOVE that! "I MUST knit that HAT..." say knitting addicts the world over! Thanks loads for your pattern.
ReplyDeleteI know it's one size, but what is the approximate size or head dimension that it fits?
ReplyDeleteLove this and can't wait to make it. Thanks!
It is stretchy and slouchy and therefore can accomodate most adult unisex head sizes.
DeleteYour pattern states that worsted weight yarn is required, but the Ravelry link states aran weight (according to your recommended yarn). I have a 100% wool yarn that should knit up to 19 sts/4 inches. Will this be good enough to knit a beanie with a decent amount of slouch?
ReplyDelete"Aran" is just "Heavy Worsted." Use whichever #4 yarn you like best. You can always add or subtract the number of stitches, seeing as how the crown decrease does not require a specific math sequence. For instance, if you're achieving that gauge with that yarn, you may consider casting-on 95 stitches to accommodate a 20" head. Hope that helps and works well for you!
DeleteThanks for this great pattern. What is the standard gauge you recommend for this hat? I know I am a super tight knitter and have to go up a couple of needle sizes, so I would like a gauge number to strive towards.
ReplyDeleteThere is no gauge. The pattern, like the original hat, only comes in one size. For your personal gauge, try knitting a 4x4 square in twisted rib and see what your stitches per inch is. Then adjust the number of cast-on stitches accordingly.
DeleteJ'adore et la tuque fait super bien! Maintenant, tout le monde en veut dans ma famille! Un vrai hit!
ReplyDeleteDe rien! Je suis très heurese entendre ça! (Je suis desolée pour ma pauvre français!)
DeleteI'm excited to start this hat! This may sound stupid but I have never done this kind of brim. It says, fold brim under and connect co edge to live sts.... are we folding it to the underneath side? I'm trying to figure out how to fold under and knit it with co edge and make that work
ReplyDeleteThat's not stupid at all! This was my first time doing a folded brim as well! You can do a long-tail cast-on and knit the brim in twisted rib stitch for the length specified and just fold it up/in half without joining, or knit it for half the length and not fold it. Hope that helps!
DeleteHi! I'm a fairly beginner knitter and the idea of folding the brim and knitting it is very intimidating!! It there a way of doing the brim without folding? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou can do a long-tail cast-on and knit the brim in twisted rib stitch for the length specified and just fold it up/in half without joining, or knit it for half the length and not fold it. Hope that helps!
DeleteYes, thank you!! Happy New Year!
DeleteI liked the look of the hat so much that I decided to try it but I dont have circular pins so I am using 2 pins instead and will sew up the seam. The pattern (especially the 6 rows of purl) doesnt look exactly like the photos. Has knitting in on 2 pins made a huge difference to the pattern? Can you also confrim that you mean 6 rows purl and not 6 rows St stitch but beginning with a purl row on the Right Side. Thanks for your help....I'm half way through...
ReplyDeleteWhenever you knit flat, you do have to change the pattern a bit from knitting in the round because when knitting in the round you are always looking at the right side of the piece. For the 6 rows of purl, in flat knitting, you would do a st st starting with a purl row. You basically need to do the opposite kind of stitch in the pattern for every other row to get the same look since for every other row, you will be knitting the 'wrong' side
Deletehello! thank you for this pattern! can you please tell me what yarn you used? thanks!!
DeleteThank you for your helpful response, Brooklyn Stanley! :)
DeleteSo happy to find this pattern! I will say that I think that in the body of the hat, I think it's actually a brioche stitch not a 1x1 rib. They're very similar though so it probably doesn't matter. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely brioche - you're absolutely right! But I felt that 1x1 (non-twisted) rib looked close enough and didn't want to explain brioche stitch! Thanks for pointing that out! For those who know brioche, I hope they'll try it out on this pattern!
DeleteHi, so I found a video that shows me Brioche (https://youtu.be/mzBdIwoPYpk), but I'm not exactly how sure how to transition from brioche back to regular knit.
DeleteI'm sitting here looking at the actual cc hat too and I thought the stitch wasn't a straight 1x1 rib and I googled brioche and I think you are right. Thanks for the info!! And thanks to the blog author for writing this up! I wrote up a pattern myself before finding this and mine was almost identical in row count but you saved me from counting stitches :)
ReplyDeleteWhen you say do a long tailed CO, does that mean in lieu of the provisional CO? I'm interested in trying the PCO, but not sure when to pull the scrap yarn. I'm a visual person, so I'm just having a hard time picturing what you mean. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteYes, a long-tail in lieu of a provisional.
DeleteThere is a woman who created a video to accompany the pattern.
DeleteFantastic pattern! Thank you! https://www.instagram.com/p/BO2uqENA_9e/?taken-by=sourfleed
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this hat! I'm finishing up my fourth one in about 10 days. It's great! Thank you for sharing this pattern
ReplyDeleteCan someone do a video tutorial? I don't understand the folding the brim to live stitches. I am a beginner. Maybe pictures of just that part of the pattern would be helpful. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHere is a pretty good video tutorial on YouTube. It is not of the same hat, and it does not demonstrate the brim with a provisional cast-on, but you'll get the idea.
Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYM8cAVx9zk
Looks so nice! Is it possible you have this in crochet or tunisian crochet? I am not a knitter. Tried and cant seem to get the two needeles thing down pat...LOL
ReplyDeleteI do not. While I do crochet, I am better at knitting than crochet and the original hat is knit, so I only wrote a pattern for a knit version. I do not intend to write a crocheted version.
DeleteThis is a link to a paid pattern from A Crocheted Simplicity. She's the best at writing patterns for crochet that looks knit. I've personally made quite a few of her hats and they've all turned out wonderfully.

I am making this hat for the first time with a cascade washable worsted weight. The 86 stitch size seams very small. I am using size 7 needles. I have only knitted up to 3.5 inch mark. Also is there a you tube of joining the brim? Thank you. Rosemary
ReplyDeleteThank you for this wonderful pattern. Just wondering, if I go ahead and use the brioche stitch will that work okay with the pattern? Would it change anything?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
As far as I know, so long as the brioche stitch can be done over 86 stitches, it should be fine. Otherwise, you'll just need to adjust your cast-on number, which won't affect the rest of the hat. If, for instance, brioche stitch needs to be done over a multiple of four stitches, then you would adjust your cast-on number to be a multiple of 4. Hope that makes sense.
DeleteI am knitting this hat now for my 13-year-old daughter-it's amazing, thank you! I spent all day yesterday knitting and ripping out the section trying to learn how to do the Brioche stitch. I finally got it! If knit in the round then the brioche stitch can be used on any number of even stitches using this pattern.
ReplyDeleteSo knit the first round after the cast on and then brioche?
Deletei made this hat and am a very tight knitter (beginner too) i know you said there is no guage but i would like to know how many stitches per inch your hat comes out at? I added stitches to the first hat but want to try creating it using the 86 co as you did. When I jumped 2 needle sizes the twisted rib is VERY tight and the rest is tooo loose, so guage would benefit me greatly. Also I think I need to work on trying to knit looser when it comes to twisted knit.
ReplyDeleteYou have created a monster! I made this hat yesterday in white and turned around today and knit it in soft yellow! The only thing I didn't do was make the ribbing with a provisional cast on. It was quite beyond me. Love this pattern way too much.
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern - obviously. I have copied and saved it at least 4 times! However, have not yet made it.
ReplyDeleteMemory issues? Or just love saving the same things I like! LOL
I have never knitted a provisional cast on before and have confused myself even more by watching a couple of dozen YouTube videos. Do you have a YouTube tutorial on the provisional cast on or can you let me know if you join the scrap wool in the round or do you cast on 87 but only join the working wool in the round.
ReplyDeleteI am desperate to make this hat, but am getting myself so confused.
Hi! Obviously I'm not the author of this blog. But to answer your questions, I just finished the hat and I watched the following youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j904tmdt6iU
DeleteAlso, I did cast on 87 and used the last to connect the chain.
Thanks for that Cassandra, I did manage to find a YouTube video that I followed, but I'll try this one, thanks again
ReplyDeletethis pattern and I decided to start knitting it! Question about doing brioche knitting instead of ribbing in the body of the hat, as it is actually supposed to be, by reading the comments: as I have never done brioche knitting, does the first "set up row" count as the first of the 4 rows of ribbing or is it set up row followed by 4 rows of brioche?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
I don't know how to edit comments, so I deleted my pervious reply to elaborate. There is no brioche in this pattern. My best guess is that if you are going to replace the ribbing with brioche, start the brioche set-up round immediately after purling. But I honestly don't know. I have tried brioche but am not very good at it, which is why I didn't include any in this pattern.
DeleteThank you for your pattern. I am going to try knitting it on a knitting machine. Is brioche stitch the same as English rib?
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about brioche; there is no brioche in this pattern.
DeleteAfter the ribbing is complete and the provisional stitches added, is the stitch count still 86 or now 172?
ReplyDeleteThe stitch count is always 86. You're knitting the prov co st and the live st together - k2tog
DeleteGot it. Thanks.
DeleteHi, I don't know if this question was asked already, but could you please tell me what your gauge is?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Hi there Julie. The question was already asked. Please read the above questions and comments as there is a lot of great info there : )
ReplyDeleteThank you for doing all the counting and writing! I was asked by a relative to help her make the C.C. hat (the ponytail version) at our next gathering. This saves me from reinventing the wheel! (Actually, this hat caught my eye a couple years ago too under similar circumstances to yours - I saw it on a fellow restaurant patron, and thought "I must knit that hat"!) Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi, I have just finished the rib for this gorgeous hat but mine looks really small. Are there any measurements for this before I continue. I'd hate to finish and then have to rip it all out.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Kathy
Can you provide instructions on how to make this hat to include an opening for a ponytail?
ReplyDeleteThank you. Brenda
There are instructions for a messy bun opening. You could also use this for a high ponytail.
DeleteWhen decreasing how many stitches do you do. I'm doing the messy bun so how many stitches should I have when I BO
ReplyDeleteJust follow the pattern. I don’t want to tell you an exact figure because that may change if you need to change the number of cast-on stitches based on your gauge. So long as you cast-on a multiple of two, you’ll be fine for decreasing since it’s k2tog all the way around.
DeleteAs for the messy bun version, just bind-off after the first decrease round. So in this case, if you cast-on 86 stitches, you’ll be binding off 43 stitches.
DeleteGreat thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm a new knitter and have a newbie question. I'm confused about the St st. I've googled and thought I had it right but I think I messed up. When you say knit 2 rnds St st I should have gone around twice or 4 times with straight knitting (on the round)? I did a knit and perl rnd because of the way I found the definition of St st, but it leaves a perl stripe. Since I'm not on straight needles I guess I shouldn't have perled the second row. And now at the top where it says St st 3 more rnds - is each rnd supposed to be 2 rows (so that would be 6?) and they all are knit? I got thought I got through the hard parts with the prov cast on with turning and joining the brim, just can't figure out these steps.
ReplyDeleteWhen you are knitting (just knitting - not purling) in-the-round, the work is automatically in Stockinette stitch, whereas you have to both knit and purl in straight/flat knitting to achieve this stitch. So it sounds like you are doing twice the amount of work, which will result in a hat twice as large as intended. Since you are a beginner, do not attempt to knit this hat flat on straight needles - it may be too confusing for you. This is a great hat for knitters who are learning how to knit in-the-round, because you’ll see how knit & purl stiches interact on circulars. Just follow the pattern - no extra work required!
DeleteThank you! So when you say 2 rnds St st I should just knit two rows. I was overthinking, but since I thought the pattern was for round needles I didn't understand why you put St st instead of 2 rnds knit.
DeleteI love this hat. I learned to knit and purl years ago but only finished a scarf and a bunch of fish rags. I decided to try this hat and even though I could only find size 9. 24" round needles and purled a few rounds I shouldn't have - it's awesome! I'll wear it all winter - and now I'm halfway done with another - on the right size needles and a better understanding of the pattern. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks for this pattern. I knit chemo hats and am always looking for something different to knit. This will fit so many different people. I'll probably make one for myself too. Mary Fran; NOT Steve.
ReplyDeleteThank you for writing down such a lovely pattern. I had some difficulty in joining cast on to brim, because I was doing it for first time. Besides that I completed the hat and gifted it to my daughter- in-law, and she loved it. Immediatly she wear it while going for office
ReplyDeletewhat did you make the pom pom out of? i love it
ReplyDeleteWhat pom-pom? There is no pom-pom on this blog post. If you are interested in adding a pom-pom to your beanie, I have often ordered faux fur ones from Lion Brand Yarn, or you can make your own with yarn either by hand or with a Clover brand pom-pom maker. They come in four different sizes.
DeleteIt shows a Pom Pom on your Revelry page. I think that's what she is referring to.
Deletecan i use straight needles for this thanks
ReplyDeleteNo; the pattern is not written for flat-knitting. You can use either a circular needle or 4-5 double-pointed needles.
DeleteLove it! So cute and thank you for your generosity and hard work in creating this free pattern! Youtube has infinite information for those of you who need help with abbreviations or tutorials. Thanks again!!
ReplyDeleteMy son showed me a picture of this hat, he wanted me to make it for his girl friend for christmas and it is giving me a hard time and christmas is almost here. I have completed it 2 or 3 times so far and it just isn't quite right. After readind your pattern I think I know where my problem is, it is stripes of purl sts, knit sts and ribbing, I was just doing purl and rib, the secret must be the 2 little knit rounds in between. One more try!mwish me luck, oh and I have just stumbled upon a tubulaire cast on youtube video by Suzanne Brian? I had decided this must be what they used but I only had a picture to work from but I recommend to all you knitters out there check it out, it was new to me and a very nice alternative to add to our cast on repertoires.
ReplyDeleteHey Clementine- I just went to Hobby Lobby and bought size 7 circular knitting needles but as soon as I got home, I realized they aren't 16" but 29"! Will this make a difference? Do I need to go MacGyver on these things and shorten them? I am very new to knitting- haven't done much besides a basic baby blanket on regular needles- so any advice is appreciated. Thanks! -Liz
ReplyDeleteThe reason why a 29” circular needle won’t work is because no one has a 29” head. A 16” circ works is because knitting is stretchy, and the average adult head size is 18-22”. You’ll need double-pointed needles for the crown, so you can knit the entire hat on DPNs if need be.
DeleteYou can use the 29" circular needles just fine and use the Magic Loop technique with them. If you don't know how to do that just google it and watch a few YouTube videos. Many knitters prefer to use the magic loop technique for knitting the in the round.
DeleteHow could I possibly do a child size in this hat?
ReplyDeleteThis pattern is only available in an adult size.
DeleteI made this for my 2 1/2 y.o. daughter. I started by CO 64 stitches. Then did about 3" twisted ribbing. I decreased the pearls to 5 and the 1x1 to 3. I kept everything else the same. Turned out great!
DeleteThank you for this pattern!
ReplyDeleteGreat pattern! It looks like the original hat has a raised rib in the 1x1 rib sections. Would that be possible to do without having to change the number of stitches in that section? I like the stitch definition when I knit into the back of the knit stitch for the 1x1 rib.
ReplyDeleteDo you know how to alter the pattern to be left Ken their “slouchy” version?
ReplyDeleteAs a bit of a newer knitter for certain projects, is it okay to use a smaller needle length that 16"?
ReplyDeleteI highly recommended you follow the pattern, and the pattern calls for using a 16” circular and/or 4-5 DPNS.
Deletehow would you modify this hat for a 6 yr old child?
ReplyDeletesorry if this posts twice
This pattern is only available in an adult size.
DeleteI loved the idea of putting the provisional sts on another needle and knitting the cast-on edge to the live stitches for the brim, and I just figured out that instead of casting a provisional cast-on to scrap yarn, I could slide the original cast-on sts onto the second pair of needles right off the bat. I feel like a genius!
ReplyDeleteIf I wanted to make the beanie how would I insert an elastic into it to make it stretchy for hair to pull through?
ReplyDeleteIf you follow the directions to make it into a messy bun beanie, there is enough room to pull hair through without any elastic.
DeleteAt the top of the opening that is
ReplyDeleteHow do you size this for children and adults?
ReplyDeleteI only have one size available.
DeleteI was wondering the CO variations for child, adult, & adult large? I wanted to make one for my daughter, my 2 grown sons, & my hubby. Thank you for the beautifully written pattern!
ReplyDeleteI only have one size available.
DeleteHi, I'm not familiar with English pattern. Can you tell for what you use the 5 mm hook?
ReplyDeleteYou will need a 5mm hook and scrap yarn for the provisional cast-on.

Having some trouble with the second decrease on the crown. If you start with 86 stitches (or any even multiple so that you can do the 1x1 rib) the first round of k2tog will leave you with 43 stitches. When you do the second decrease, how do you deal with the odd number of stitches? Do you just knit the last stitch or do you k3tog the last three?
ReplyDeleteEither way is fine.
DeleteThank you for asking this question! That's where I'm at in the pattern right now and was not finding the answer anywhere!
DeleteThank you for your pattern! I wanted a hat to go with my super-bulky knit look crocheted scarf) so I made a super-bulky version with #15 needles. Its in projects linked to your Ravelry pattern :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteI made my first hat with size 7 29” circulars using magic loop. Apparently I knit tight because while the hat can stretch to fit my head it actually fits my 5yo daughter best.
I’m working on my second with size 8 29” circulars and am also going to try brioche in place of the 1x1. Wish me luck!
This was the first time I made this (for my wife). After finishing I noticed that there was a jog when I switched to a different stitch. I made another one for my 2 1/2 y.o. daughter. Same thing happened. How do I prevent this from happening again? It's noticeable to me but to others, they can't see it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
ReplyDeleteThere’s going to be a jog - that’s the nature of knitting in-the-round; it’s because you’re knitting in a spiral. The original hat has a seam, which is a lot more noticeable than a jog. Just wear the hat with the jog side on the back of the head, and let the slouchy purl rounds fold and hide the jogs.
DeleteIf you really do have an issue with the jogs, maybe you can figure out a way to hide them based on this YouTube tutorial for hiding color jogs in stripe knitting in-the-round:

Good Morning. I am making your beautiful hat. I have just finished the first decrease. I now have to knit 3 rows of St st and then decrease again. This will leave me aprox. 21 stitches left. This seems like a lot of stitches to leave. Won't this make it very bulky on the top of hat? It feels like I am missing a step. Please advise.
ReplyDeleteYou are not missing a step. That creates the gathered effect on top of the crown just like the original hat.
DeleteWOW...what a lot of comments, and a fun hat. I want to make it in a kid size...thoughts as to how to modify the pattern? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI made one for my daughter just using thinner yarn and smaller needles. Makes it easier than trying to edit the pattern itself. That or try to take out one repeat from the decrease at the top all the way down.
DeleteHi, Did you cast on the same amount of stitches for the thinner yarn? I’ve made for addictive lots but would love to make for granddaughters.
DeleteFor anyone looking to do the brioche instead of rib that made it this far in the comments, I think I figured out the best way to do it. Instead of 2 st st rows, just knit one row and then do the set up row of K1, yf sl1yo. Brioche uses 2 rows to make one full row so it's a total of 8 rows after the set up in order to do 4 rows of the stitch. To transition back to normal knit stitches I modified row 8. Instead of doing the yarn over with the slip stitch, I instead moved the yarn to the back, slipped the stitch, then moved the yarn to the front again. Then it's just 2 rows of knit like the original pattern. For the brioche technique itself I found this website helpful

Good luck all!
someone published a cute set of fingerless mitts to match this pattern. I want to make them but now can't find the pattern. ideas?
ReplyDeleteI do not have a pattern for fingerless mitts. Search the projects on Ravelry for some inspiration. Username CrescentMoonMama made some mittens that look like my hat pattern.
ReplyDeleteHello, I am struggling with the provisional cast on. Thank you for your instructional video! The crocheted chain is so tight that I have difficulty pulling out the 'bumps'. I've tried this a couple of times loosening up the crochet. So, I have 2 problems. 1. Trying to locate the bumps visually and then 2. Unraveling the life stitches from the crochet. I must be breaking the bump somehow. Any suggestions? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDeborah
Can this be done on dpns or is the pattern suited to circular needles?
ReplyDeleteEither.
DeleteI've made a few of these now. I found the video and this last one is my favourite because I used the twisted rib on it.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
The photo on this page shows what looks like a different pattern for the top decreases. It looks like regular decreases instead of the two K2tog rows. Do you have the instructions for how you did that?
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern! Such a fun knit and I learned a few of new things (folded brim, twisted rib & provisional cast on). I had always shied away from anything with a provisional cast on, seemed so daunting of a task, but this pattern forced me to learn it and I couldn't be happier!! :) I get so many compliments on this hat. I am starting my fourth one today!! Thanks again!!
ReplyDeleteI am brand new to knitting and I am super proud that I was able to make this cute hat! I found the crochet provisional cast on worked way better than another method I tried and tried to master. Anyway, can't wait to make more for my daughters!
DeleteDo you have a suggestion for a YouTube video to watch for this cast on?
DeleteTo make the top knot beanie do you mean decrease the 1-2 rounds of pearl EACH time or just the last one?
ReplyDeleteIt would be each time
DeleteMy daughter wants this hat with a brim. Any suggestions on how to add a brim to it?
ReplyDeleteJust to help add some flavour to this pattern for other yarn weights.. for a slouchy messy bun beanie (open top), I used DK yarn with 4mm needles, CO 96 stitches initially using PCO, do the twisted rib as directed and then after the joining of the brim and doing the knit stitches I did K4 M1 to make 120 stitches to give the stretch in the body of the hat, after this I did purl 6 rows, 2 st st, 3 rib, 2 st st for the pattern and then decreased as directed and it came to the right height. I tried the full beanie with bulky/chunky yarn on 6mm needles, CO 76 stitches, do twisted rub and brim tuck, 4 rows of purl, 1 st st, 2 rib, 1 st st (3 times), then 2 more st st, decrease, 2 st st, decrease and it came to a nice height finished with pom pom :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for this beautiful, fun to knit pattern. My daughter loves her hat and she looks so pretty wearing it. Finishing my second one now. I may add a furry pompom.
ReplyDeleteHi Clementine, thank you so much for your generosity in sharing this pattern and for all the information you offered with the questions that were asked! I have learned a lot just from reading through all the answers.
ReplyDeleteI am sort of a newbie knitter, not a great knitter but a tenacious one that tries to keep going. This hat has given me inspiration to try another project.
Thanks again!
I would like to print this out without all the comments, how can I do that, wish there was a print option....
ReplyDeleteI copy and paste patterns into Word documents. Then I can use fonts and a size I can easily read. I also copy & paste comments or parts of comments, keeping only the useful info.
DeleteThanks so much for an awesome pattern. I loved making it and have started a second one.
ReplyDeleteThis is a cute hat and am printing it out now. But I’m wondering if there is a way of printing just the pattern without all the comments attached. I just killed a tree printing it! 😉
ReplyDeleteI copy and paste patterns into Word documents. Then I can use fonts and a size I can easily read. I also copy & paste comments or parts of comments, keeping only the useful info.
DeleteHighlight and paste into a word program
ReplyDeleteAm switching yarn and needle size and making a baby hat...I'm thinking it will be pretty cute...
ReplyDeleteLove this Beanie pattern! Thank you for sharing. I can’t tell you how many times I start a pattern and then it makes no sense. I will try this and learn soon!
ReplyDeleteIs two rounds stockinette 1knit/1purl (2 rows) OR 1knit/1purl/1knit/1purl (4 rows?)
ReplyDeleteI've usually thought o 1 round 'stockinette' as 1knit/1purl(2 rows) Thanks!
There's no purling; one rnd of knitting in-the-rnd = 1 rnd St st. Knitting in-the-round is automatically creating the St st that is achieved in flat-knitting by knitting the RS and purling the WS.
DeleteToward the end of the pattern the instructions say knit 2 rounds St st. Then knit 3 more rounds St st (5 rounds total after the last 2 rounds St st). So should I end up with 5 rounds of St st or 7 rounds of St st?
ReplyDelete5 rounds total. 2 rnds St st + 3 more rounds St st = 5 total rnds.
DeleteI just want to know what exactly is provisional cast on! I have been knitting for over 50 years, most of them in England, and have never heard of it.
ReplyDeleteWhat does 6 mds purl mean? I googled it and it says mitered decrease. That can't be right?
ReplyDelete6 rnds = six rounds

ReplyDeleteWant to make tomkas pattern. Thank you for sharing. I will try this and learn soon!
ReplyDeleteTomkas pattern is a logo site
DeleteAwesome hat...have been looking at this hat repeatedly, this is a very accurate reproduction! Thank you so much for this well-written pattern!
ReplyDeleteDo you have to do a provisional cast on? Can’t I just cast on 86 and start knitting? I have so much trouble trying a provisional 🙁
ReplyDeleteYou need to do the provisional in order to do the folded brim. If you just want a ribbed brim, CO any way you prefer.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: Begin crown. Pattern says “knit 3 more rnds st st for a total of 5 rnds after the last 2 st st rnds .” Shouldn’t that read “total of 5 rnds after the 4 rnds of 1x1 rib?”
ReplyDeleteNo, it's a total of 5 rnds. 2+3=5.
DeleteWould you consider re-posting this pattern without the orange background?
ReplyDeleteOrange is the theme of my nickname Clementine. And the background shouldn't show up as orange, it should be white where the text is.

I made this with straight needles (I didn’t have circular and didn’t think it would make a difference...I was wrong). It fits my daughter which is great, but I want to make it for me! Do you have a swatch/gauge I can Follow to see if my knitting is too tight for the size needles?

Hi, I have just finished knitting this beanie and it's great, however I expected it to be a little more slouchy, maybe my head is a little bigger than yours. How would I make it more slouchy? Would I just do another repeat of the body part or would I do more rows of k1 p1?
ReplyDeleteRavens Football Live
ReplyDeleteHey nice custom beanie. I have just purchased these kind of beanies from a local store store in my town. the beanies are not exactly same but are look alike!!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if this has been answered but I'm wondering how you would adjust this pattern for a toddler/child sized hat. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSlouchy version: after 3rd round ending in k 2 rows, do 6 rounds P then 10 rows straight. K3 around. 3 rows k then k2 around. Then break yarn, weave end through stitches like rest of pattern. Tyvm for this pattern. It has been a fav of my kids and my neices & nephews. As for size, I have tried different stitches. Adult 68 on size 8 74-76 on size 6. Depends on toddler head size and yarn used. Work pattern until it is long enough to see if it would fit the child's head subtract or add keeping # stitches even
